The Theatre of Proof

The occasion

In 1999, the city of Antwerpen (Belgium) celebrated the 400th birthday anniversary of its most famous citizen, the painter Anton van Dyck. As it is common practice nowadays, relations to our time are emphasized, so besides three exhibitions of paintings a fourth exhibition called »Laboratorium« was shown from 27 June to 3 October in the Provinciaal Museum voor Fotografie. Laboratorium intended to reflect about laboratories in different contexts as for example arts, science, psychology, religion, and architecture. One of the projects was a collection of 15 presentations under the title ›The Theatre of Proof‹, assembled by Bruno Latour. The presentations ranged from rather usual lectures to various kinds of theatre. They were recorded and shown on television screens during the exhibition.
