The end of midi

We are designing and building a prototype and software for a wireless control panel. The hardware design is independent of the type of data transmission to a host (which we assume to be the ubiquitous pc or laptop computer). We try to make good use of mass produced digital standards such as USB and 802.11, but also OpenSource? software.

The prime target is to have extremly concise and flexible interface elements that can be easily combined into different configurations with the software automatically adjusting to the parts connected.

Lets look at a good hardware interface example to start off with, the Clavia G2 modular synthesizer: Rotary dials are combined with led displays resulting in a much smoother operation than motor faders but having the same possibilities plus the option of doing endless dials with visual feedback.
